The films of Ben Rivers (born Somerset, 1972, lives in London) are rich, cinematic portraits that explore wilderness environments and self-contained worlds, representing memory through visual fragments. Primarily shot on 16mm black and white film, sometimes on out-of-date stock, Rivers’ work has the appearance of ageing, archival footage. Pakistani artist Shahzia Sikander specializes in Indian and Persian miniature painting, a traditional style that is both highly stylized and disciplined. Her work blends the Eastern focus on precision and methodology with a Western emphasis on creative, subjective expression. Sikander juxtaposes Hindu, Muslim, and Western iconography, entangling histories, meanings, and beliefs. Marina Abramovic is a Serbian artist, considered the most relevant performance artist alive. In this interview she talks about a life full of actions: Walking the Chinese Wall, Seven Easy Pieces, Erotic Balkan Epic, Count On Us, The House With The Ocean View, Rest Energy, Carrying The Skeleton, Cleaning The House. Robert Gardner visits the great American painter Mark Tobey in Basel, Switzerland, where he lived for the last years of his life. Tobey was together with Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko a leading figure in the American Abstract Expressionism movement. With remarkable candor and objectivity, Tobey discusses his work and that of fellow artists including Picasso. His keen wit lends humor and bite to his critiques, and his own vitality and spirit make an important statement on his work and on Art itself. |
