Waiting, Diango Hernández

Diango Hernández is a contemporary internationally-recognised Cuban artist whose work is often categorised as “political art”. “Waiting” is a 2005 piece of videoart in which Hernández combines the melancholic song “No puedo ser feliz” (I can’t be happy) with a series of canonical portraits of political figures that have had in one way or another an influence in the history of Latin America. The title is symptomatic of the fatalist surrender attitude that the subcontinent has towards its own history. It was released at Statement Art Forum Berlin.
