Studio Banana TV Interviews Esther Pizarro

Studio Banana TV interviews Esther Pizarro, a prominent figure of contemporary Spanish conceptual sculpture.

Interview realised with the sponsorship of the Universidad Europea de Madrid

Esther Pizarro (Madrid, 1967) studied in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Alcala,  where she undertook a doctorate in Fine Arts on the concept of the space in Philosophy and its application to the sculpture. Later she obtained a Fullbright scholarship in  Los Angeles, where she initiated studies on the city. Then she was in the Academy of Spain in Rome and the College of Spain in Paris. Her relationship with the urban frameworks has shaped itself throughout her artistic race in different works, in which she has entered herself in an investigation that is evolving.  Her latest works have derived towards a study of the landscape that hints us not only to a city in particular, but to the human being who belongs to this landscape. A reflection on the industrial landscapes and the communications networks.

As an evolution of her previous creations where the city always has occupied a central space, the glance is turned aside now towards the periphery of large cities: those residual spaces that nowadays constitute the archaeology of the industrial society. The human being as inhabited territory, modeling of an inner geography and element of interaction with the urban cosmovision is one of the conceptual subjects that appear, in radical and successive form, in her more recent work.

Throughout her career, she has exhibited in diverse individual and collective shows such as Redes de contención; Encuentros, in Casa Velazquez of Madrid; Perceptions of L.A., Topografía y Memoria, in the CBA ; Topo+grafías, in Madrid. Valladolid, Gijon and Seville; El haz y el envés, Cuerpos expandidos, Geografías interiores, etc.

In addition, she has participated in collective exhibitions in ARCO, in the Biennial of Venice, the Cervantes Institute, Lisbon Art, the Academy of Spain in Rome, Galería Raquel Ponce, etc. Currently she is professor of Artistic Creation and Theory of the Arts in the Universidad Europea de Madrid.
